PARTNERING WITH RURAL GUATEMALANS TO IMPROVE HEALTH & WELL-BEING

OUR COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO REDUCING CHRONIC CHILDHOOD MALNUTRITION IN MAYAN COMMUNITIES IS DESIGNED FOR LONG-TERM, SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS.

More than half of all Guatemalans live in poverty, and the country has the 6th highest rate of malnutrition in the world. Poverty is even more severe and pervasive in rural indigenous communities, affecting 4 out of every 5 people, and the prevalence of chronic childhood malnutrition ranges from 50 to 90 percent. Chronic childhood malnutrition causes physical stunting and cognitive impairments that prevent children from reaching their full potential.

ALDEA employs a community-led development approach that targets chronic childhood malnutrition while building our rural Guatemalan partners’ capacity to address future challenges on their own. We work together to install basic water and sanitation infrastructure, implement nutrition and sustainable agriculture initiatives, and ensure everyone in the communityβ€”including women and youthβ€”has a voice in the decision-making process.
